Things or Moments?

So this weeks positive quote speaks deep to me. I am going to write it here as well. I think it is important and something we need to keep in our minds.

The most beautiful things

in life are not things.

They are people, places,

memories, and pictures.

They're feelings and moments,

and smiles, and laughter.

It's so important for us to remember that our kids will not always remember everyday life. They will remember the memories we've made. The moments we made special. The time we took just for them. When on our death beds we will not ask for people to bring things around us. We will ask for our loved ones to be near. It's important that we have a connection with our kids while they are young. This way when they are older they feel connected and we are not trying to get to know them again.

Making memories does not have to cost a lot. This is coming from someone who does not have money. It's about taking time. Taking time to play a game, make ice cream, take a walk. The best memories I have with my grandparents are not ones where they bought me things, it was making sugar cookies in the kitchen. Taking a walk around town. Sitting while grandma read a story. Playing store while my grandpa worked in his smoke shop. He let me play on an old broken cash register. When he passed away I got that register. I have it even to this day. It's old, ugly and doesn't work. It's heavy and a nuisance, but it holds so many memories. It's a part of me.

Not having a lot of money, I figure different things to do. We take long walks. We walk to get an ice cream or Icee. We bake and laugh. We have family Nerf wars. We sit and talk and tell jokes. With our tax return we bought Knott's passes. These are very inexpensive and do not have any blackout dates. You can do any place you like. Castle Park, Fiesta Village, Scandia or any other place that your family may enjoy. The cool thing about this is that you paid for it when you had money. During the year when you are low on funds you can still go. We paid for the parking, drinks, and food to be added to our passes, so it literally only costs gas to get there. We don't spend any money while we are there. We just stay for a couple hours and have fun. During the holidays we drive through our nearby neighborhoods and look at lights and decorations.

There are always sites online that offer free events. I am not good at keeping up with these, but know people who are. There are free craft days at Michael's and Home Depot. You can find more info on their websites. There are community events a lot. Facebook is a great place to check on these. If you have any other tips or ideas email us. We'd love to hear from you.
